The Autobiography of a Great Indian Bustard

My Birth and Early Days

Hello, I am a Great Indian Bustard, and my name is Gauri. I was born in the dry grasslands of Rajasthan. My nest was a simple, shallow hole on the ground, hidden among the tall grasses. My mother took great care of me, protecting me from predators and teaching me how to find food. As a chick, I was small and fluffy, but I grew quickly under my mother’s watchful eye.

Growing Up in the Grasslands

As I grew older, I started to explore the grasslands. My home is a vast, open area with dry grasses and scattered bushes. Here is what a typical day looks like for me:

Time of Day Activity
Morning Searching for food like insects and seeds
Mid-Morning Taking a rest under the shade of a bush
Afternoon Walking around and exploring the grasslands
Evening Eating more food and preparing for the night
Night Sleeping safely hidden in the grasses

Special Features

I am one of the heaviest flying birds in India. Here are some special things about me:

  • Tall and Sturdy: I stand tall, almost a meter in height, with strong legs that help me walk long distances.
  • Beautiful Feathers: My feathers are a mix of brown, white, and black, which help me blend into the grasslands.
  • Strong Wings: My wings are large and powerful, allowing me to fly high and far.

Challenges I Face

Life in the grasslands is not easy, and I face many challenges:

  • Predators: Animals like foxes and eagles sometimes try to catch me or my chicks.
  • Habitat Loss: Humans are building more farms and cities, reducing the grasslands where I live.
  • Hunting: Some people hunt birds like me, even though it is against the law.

My Friends and Helpers

I am not alone in my struggle for survival. Many people and animals help me:

Friend Role
Forest Rangers Protecting my habitat and keeping poachers away
Scientists Studying my behavior to help me survive
Other Birds Sharing the grasslands and alerting me to danger

My Daily Activities

Every day, I do many things to stay healthy and safe. Here is what a typical day looks like for me:

  • Morning: I wake up early and search for food. I eat insects, seeds, and small reptiles.
  • Mid-Morning: After eating, I rest in the shade. The grasslands can get very hot, so I need to cool down.
  • Afternoon: I explore my territory, looking for more food and checking for any danger.
  • Evening: As the sun sets, I eat again to fill my belly before nightfall.
  • Night: I find a safe spot in the tall grasses to sleep, hidden from predators.

My Dreams

Even though life is tough, I have dreams. I dream of a world where my grasslands are safe and where humans protect me and my home. I want to live a long life, raise many chicks, and see my kind flourish once more in the wild. I hope that people understand how important it is to protect us and our habitat. I am Gauri, a Great Indian Bustard, living in the grasslands of Rajasthan.
