Dera Natung Government College which is well known as DNGC and it was founded on 6 September 1979 and earlier known as Government College, Itanagar. It was started with the aim of giving higher education to young people in the state when opportunities were very limited.
The founders wanted more than just granting degrees; they wanted to encourage students to explore new knowledge areas, develop leadership skills, and prepare for future challenges in both personal and social life. They aimed to create competent individuals who could promote ideals like equality, social justice, communal harmony, and cultural diversity.
Initially, the college operated from the Govt. Higher Secondary School building in Itanagar, offering degrees in English, Hindi, Economics, and History in the evening. Later, in 1986, it moved to its current campus and operated both day and night shifts until 1990. Since then, the college has grown significantly in terms of infrastructure, students, faculty, academic performance, and research.
Today, Dera Natung Government College is a leading higher education institution in the state, with a focus on teaching and learning excellence. It was renamed in 2001-02 to honor the contributions of the late Dera Natung, a visionary leader who worked towards education development in the state.
The college has over 4000 students across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams, with 14 departments and a dedicated faculty and staff.
